Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cups rice Chex cereal
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2-3/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the mixture is melted and smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Put the chex cereal in a medium container that has a matching lid (a Tupperware-type bowl with a lid is perfect) and pour the melted chocolate mixture on top.
Use a spatula to gently fold and stir until all of the cereal pieces are evenly coated.
Alternatively, mix the chocolate and cereal together in any medium-size bowl and then transfer to a one gallon zip top bag for the next step.
  • Allow the chocolate-coated cereal to cool slightly before coating with the sugar. About 20-30 minutes. The chocolate should be about room temperature, but still tacky/sticky to the touch (not set). This reduces the amount of powdered sugar that needs to be used.
  • Add 1/2 cup powdered sugar to the bowl, container, or zip top bag, seal tightly, and shake gently until all of the cereal pieces are coated in powdered sugar.
You can add more powdered sugar (about a spoonful at a time) until the pieces are coated to your liking.
  • Allow puppy chow to cool and set. You can leave it in the container at room temp, spread it on a parchment-lined baking sheet or even pop it in the fridge.

Notes

How to Store:
Puppy Chow is the ultimate make-ahead treat or snack. It keeps at room temp for about 5-7 days (store it in a tightly sealed container). You can also pop it in the freezer where it will keep for 1-3 months, usually depending on your freezer.
Ways to Use This Small Batch Recipe:
This recipe is perfect if you want a mini-batch of this irresistible snack for yourself or a few friends. It's also excellent if you want to use the treat to top or decorate another dessert (such as a cake or cookies). No need to make a gigantic batch when you just need a little bit!
