My Go-To French Toast Recipe

My go-to French toast recipe: I usually use this simple recipe from Robert Irvine on Food Network.

Most French toast recipes require day-old bread, eggs, milk or cream, a little sugar, and cinnamon and nutmeg.

You’ll also need a well-buttered hot pan (non-stick makes things extra easy). The short ingredients list makes French toast a popular choice for a quick meal anytime—not just breakfast!

Need Make-Ahead French Toast?

Have you tried making a French toast casserole before? These dishes come together quickly with sliced bread, a custard base, and several hours hanging out in the fridge. Just bake in the morning and serve! Opting to make a French toast casserole instead of frying slices individually is an excellent solution for when you need a make-ahead brunch recipe.

What to Serve With French Toast

Whether serving up French toast for brunch or a quick weeknight dinner, it’s great to offer some easy side dishes alongside. I like serving French toast with some favorite toppings (like maple syrup or whipped cream) and offering a big dish of mixed fruit or berries as well. An egg dish (even as simple as scrambled eggs) is a great way to balance the meal.

Fresh Fruit

French toast is perfect served with sliced strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and bananas. If you are looking for something a little more exotic, try slices of kiwi fruit, mango, or pineapple.

Instead of topping the French toast with the fruit, you can also mix up a fruit salad. Or if you are hosting a brunch, try offering a selection of fruit served with a creamy fruit dip.

Baked Apple Slices

We love baked apple slices! I usually don’t bother with a recipe, but you can use one if you like. It’s kind of like an apple crisp, but with just the apples, a little butter, sugar, and cinnamon. These are SO good and they are great on top of French toast.

Cinnamon and Sugar

Who doesn’t love a piece of cinnamon sugar toast? It’s delicious! Try sprinkling your French toast with a mix of cinnamon and sugar for the same effect. Takes just minutes to mix up a quick batch.

Syrup

Maple syrup is a classic choice for French toast, but other options include homemade strawberry syrup or blueberry syrup too.

Whipped cream

Homemade whipped cream is my favorite. It makes breakfast or brunch extra-special. Whip up a batch of basic whipped cream or try something a little more exciting with chocolate, strawberry, or brown sugar whipped cream. Yum.

Nutella, Peanut Butter, or Biscoff Spread

These options might be indulgent, but they are SO perfect on top of French toast. Biscoff might be my favorite.

Scrambled Eggs

A side of eggs will add some extra protein to a meal of French toast. You can prepare the eggs any way you like—whether scrambled, fried, hard-boiled, etc.

Egg Bakes

Egg Bakes are really convenient if you are serving up brunch since they can be made ahead of time and warmed up. They are also easy to serve to large groups.

Quiche

Quiche is another popular choice for a brunch dish. There are so many variations of flavors, you can make it just how you like!

Hashbrown Casseroles

If you are serving up French toast for a large brunch gathering, consider adding in some easy casseroles too. A simple hashbrown casserole rounds things out nicely.

Bacon, Sausage, or Sliced Ham

If you’re looking for a savory option to balance out all that sweetness, crispy bacon or sausage is a great choice to serve alongside your French toast. Sliced ham fried up in a pan will work too. Pro tip: try cooking your bacon in the oven to save a ton of time and cleanup!

Yogurt

Try Greek yogurt (or whatever is your personal favorite) alongside French toast. It makes a healthier topping than whipped cream if you want to keep things on the lighter side.
