Did you know you can make an awesome stabilized whipped cream by simply adding instant pudding mix to heavy cream? It’s a fantastic little kitchen hack and so much easier than figuring gelatin sheets.

My vanilla stabilized whipped cream is a popular recipe here and the recipe I’m sharing today is just a little variation on it! It’s great for topping other desserts, but you can also just eat it like a banana mousse too!

Hint: You can also do this with chocolate whipped cream!

What Is “Stabilized Whipped Cream”?

Whipped cream is generally a pretty delicate dessert element. Once whipped, it slowly deflates over time so it can be tricky to prepare in advance. It can be done, but it’s usually ideal to prepare it right before serving your dessert.

Because of the ingredients in the instant pudding mix, this recipe is more stable than traditional whipped cream. It is great for piping, can be prepared in advance, and could even be used as a filling for various desserts.

Being able to prep whipped cream in advance is super handy when you are preparing desserts for an event and need to know everything is 100% ready to serve.

My vanilla stabilized whipped cream recipe is probably the most popular choice, but banana is a fun flavor too! It would be great on desserts, but don’t miss the chance to pair with homemade pancakes or waffles either!

Note: Even though the whipped cream is stabilized in the recipe, this does not change how long whipped cream can be served at room temp for food safety–so always follow those important food safety guidelines!

The 3 Ingredients You Will Need:

This is such an easy recipe–you only need three ingredients!

Heavy Cream – Be sure to purchase “heavy cream” or “heavy whipping cream” as these products contain the right amount of fat for producing whipped cream. Funnily enough, products labeled “whipping cream” actually are a little too low in fat to get the right results!

Instant Banana Pudding Mix – Be sure to grab an instant banana pudding mix and simply measure out the amount required from the dry powder mix.

Powdered sugar – Just a little extra sweetness for this recipe–you can also sub in granulated sugar if you do not have powdered on hand.

How to Make It

This is such a simple little recipe! Just whisk together the ingredients until smooth (be sure the pudding mix is dissolved) and then whip everything to medium or stiff peaks. Full printable recipe card follows at the end of the post!

How to Store or Make Ahead

Store the whipped cream in the fridge up to 5 days.

FAQS for Whipped Cream

The Heavy Cream Isn’t Turning into Whipped Cream–What’s Wrong?

First off, make sure you’ve purchased heavy whipping cream, not “whipping cream”. Whipping cream is actually lower in fat and it won’t whip well (if at all). The brand you chose might also be affecting the final results. I’ll note that I’ve had repeated bad results with Target’s Good & Gather brand.

Can I Freeze Whipped Cream?

If you accidentally prepared too much whipped cream, you may wish to save some for later. Luckily you can totally freeze whipped cream! Check out this easy tutorial on How to Freeze Whipped Cream.

Can I Pipe Whipped Cream?

Generally you can pipe regular whipped cream (if whipped to medium or stiff peaks), but it does start to deflate quickly. This recipe for stabilized whipped cream will hold its shape really well. It should still be refrigerated until it’s time to serve, but it pipes well and will hold its shape.
